Video - Shirley Ann Jackson, president, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, recently discussed the importance of communication in today's interconnected global world where people of different cultures must work together. Jackson, a theoretical physicist, was chairman of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission in the 1990s, and currently serves on the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology, appointed by President Obama in 2009. She delivered her comments as a keynote speaker at the Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing 2011, the world’s largest gathering of women in computing.
Jackson's keynote, titled What if I Lived on the World Stage?, addressed the importance of meeting the challenges and opportunities presented today, with a global perspective: "We are fortunate to live in a time of interconnectedness, where communications and collective action are possible at an international level. We have seen the consequence of this in terms of social and structural change in a number of countries recently. However, in thrusting people of different cultures together daily and rapidly, our smaller world also creates difficulties in achieving true understanding and consideration."
Jackson continued, "Science and technology work across language and culture in a special way. They are global disciplines that reach past nationalities and ethnicities. Thanks to new technologies, we have the opportunity to work in a coordinated way as we face challenges that affect everyone on this planet."

Now that your positioning is done, what do you do?
You have spent weeks researching your markets, building competitive taxonomies and calling together disparate company stakeholders to get your positioning statement complete. Now what? This is a really good question.
Just to refresh, the objective of positioning is to find a perception you want to create in your target customer’s mind—one that addresses customer issues and enables you to focus on the highly desired and highly competitive features of your product relative to your competitors products in your target market (see How to Create Positioning that Works - A 5-Part Methodology). Once you find the perception you want to create, you need to take steps to make it happen.
It is important to know what a positioning statement is, and what it isn’t. It is not a tagline, advertising slogan, marketing copy for websites and datasheets, or company mission statement. A positioning statement is a perception you want to create in your target customer's mind. It sets the competitive agenda, focuses on your solution's most compelling attributes and much more, literally touching every aspect of your company.
If your positioning is truly competitive, your sales teams should be almost unbeatable when properly trained and provided with the sales tools needed to win business. The positioning statement won’t likely be the message, but it will greatly influence the messages, strategies and tactics to create the desired perception in the target customer’s mind.

Atlantis Computing™, the leader in Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) storage and performance optimization solutions, today announced that Frankfurter Bankgesellschaft, an international private bank with 7 Billion Swiss Francs under management, has implemented Atlantis ILIO as part of its Citrix XenDesktop desktop virtualization project to reduce the cost of storage by 93 percent and improve the user experience. Axept AG, a Swisscom IT services company, recommended and delivered the Atlantis ILIO solution to Frankfurter Bankgesellschaft, cutting the bank’s VDI storage costs and solving the performance challenges that were preventing the VDI project from being deployed company-wide.
“Atlantis ILIO is an enabler for VDI. If you don't solve the storage I/O problem, the cost per desktop is extremely high. For Frankfurter Bank, the cost per desktop was 2,000 CHF using our SAN,” said Zdravko Ruzicic, Head of Systems & Network Engineering, Frankfurter Bankgesellschaft. “If you don't solve the cost and performance issues intelligently, management won’t accept the cost of VDI and it will lead to project cancellation. Atlantis ILIO enabled us to implement VDI for a lower cost than a physical PC by reusing our existing SAN more efficiently and reducing our storage costs by 93 percent in the process.”
Frankfurter Bankgesellschaft wanted to implement a virtual desktop client environment to provide secure and reliable remote access for employees and contract developers that could easily be managed by their IT staff. IT management was committed to the virtualization strategy, but the pilot VDI deployment suffered from severe I/O bottlenecks and users complained about poor performance.
The bank considered several options to improve storage performance, but costs were staggering, particularly given the scale of the bank’s deployment and limited resources available. Choosing Atlantis ILIO allowed the bank to dramatically reduce IOPS required from the storage system, cut the storage capacity consumed and improved application response time for a fraction of the cost of buying additional SAN or SSD storage. Using Atlantis ILIO, Frankfurter Bank was able to reduce the cost of storage per desktop from 2,000 CHF per desktop to just 132 CHF, or the equivalent of $2,223 USD down to $150 USD with a much better user experience.

New Research From Wisegate Exposes Increasing Risk In Making Critical IT And Information Security Decisions
81% of Senior IT Decision Makers Need Better IT Project and Technology Information
Austin, Texas — Austin-based start-up Wisegate, the social knowledge network, released research that reveals senior IT professionals are experiencing an information void that is leading to increased risk in critical decision making. Amid the growing volume of vendor sales hype and social networking noise, Wisegate’s study shows that access to the most trusted sources of information – peers who work in the same industry with similar experience – is declining. As a result, IT management is less likely to have the information they need to make the best data security and information technology decisions for their companies.
At a time when technologies and corporate IT environments are rapidly growing in complexity, resource-strapped IT professionals are called upon to make more high-impact decisions in less time. In this high-pressure atmosphere, many senior IT leaders report that they don't have sufficient time or adequate resources to gather all the facts they need to confidently and quickly make IT decisions.
In hundreds of hours of interviews with senior IT professionals Wisegate found that:
· 81% said they want more practical IT project and technology information
· 89% rated peers as their preferred source of most trusted IT information
· 81 % said trusted feedback from senior IT peers would help reduce risk in IT decisions
Wisegate’s research found that IT decision makers commonly expressed a higher level of trust in their peers because they are not influenced by vendors, they have practical knowledge through experience and are usually able to provide a superior level of detailed IT information that includes the full story – both good and bad – about their experiences. The research also found, however, that despite the preference for peer feedback, meaningful peer relationships are on the decline.

Austin, Texas — Austin-based start-up Wisegate, the social knowledge network, released research that reveals senior IT professionals are experiencing an information void that is leading to increased risk in critical decision making. Amid the growing volume of vendor sales hype and social networking noise, Wisegate’s study shows that access to the most trusted sources of information – peers who work in the same industry with similar experience – is declining. As a result, IT management is less likely to have the information they need to make the best data security and information technology decisions for their companies.
At a time when technologies and corporate IT environments are rapidly growing in complexity, resource-strapped IT professionals are called upon to make more high-impact decisions in less time. In this high-pressure atmosphere, many senior IT leaders report that they don't have sufficient time or adequate resources to gather all the facts they need to confidently and quickly make IT decisions.
In hundreds of hours of interviews with senior IT professionals Wisegate found that:
· 81% said they want more practical IT project and technology information
· 89% rated peers as their preferred source of most trusted IT information
· 81 % said trusted feedback from senior IT peers would help reduce risk in IT decisions
Wisegate’s research found that IT decision makers commonly expressed a higher level of trust in their peers because they are not influenced by vendors, they have practical knowledge through experience and are usually able to provide a superior level of detailed IT information that includes the full story – both good and bad – about their experiences. The research also found, however, that despite the preference for peer feedback, meaningful peer relationships are on the decline.
Wisegate is an invitation-only community where senior IT professionals meet in a private environment to exchange knowledge and solve problems with their peers.
