Data Integration Study Compares ETL with Next Generation Technologies - http://bit.ly/qY0RFx

While ETL continues to be the predominant data integration technology in use today, the sheer size and complexity of today's information and application systems require new levels of innovation that lower costs, deliver rapid time to value, and put more control into the hands of business users.

A new study by IdealNet, a professional business expertise and technical services company, takes a look at the data integration technology curve, from the 1980s to present day, examining first, second and third generation solutions. It also compares first generation tools such as conventional ETL with newer open source and data virtualization technologies, and includes recommendations as to which technologies would be most appropriate based on an organization's data integration requirements.

The results of the study are captured in a video, titled "An Analysis of Data Integration Technologies." Some of the key findings:

· Informatica is the leading provider of ETL, clearly defines ETL for batch oriented bulk file transfer

· Talend and Pentaho are the open source leaders with associated ETL and BI strategies

· ETL is limited in scalability – each connection is essentially standalone

· Queplix 3rd generation product – leading data virtualization solution, better suited to integrate 2, 3, 4 or more sources

· Unique advanced data virtualization platform provides greater capability, lowers costs

Utah Transit Authority Relies on Nexsan Assureon for Automated Data Archiving and Disaster Recovery

Expansive Public Transportation Agency Reduces its Backup Window Using Secure Online Archiving Solution from Nexsan

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif., July 26, 2011 -- Nexsan®, a leading independent provider of disk-based storage systems, today announced that the Utah Transit Authority (UTA) has selected the Nexsan Assureon® to improve its object storage archive, assure regulatory compliance and seamlessly support its disaster recovery strategy. Using Assureon from Nexsan, UTA has dramatically reduced its backup window from five days to one while improving the overall performance, integrity and availability of its data, video archives, and CAD drawing archives.

UTA operates a public transportation system throughout the Wasatch Front of Utah. Transportation includes fixed route buses, express buses, ski buses, three light rail lines (TRAX), and a commuter rail line (FrontRunner) that travels from Salt Lake City to Peasant View, north of Ogden. Its main operations are based in Salt Lake City.

As with most public transportation agencies, a large volume of the data UTA must protect comes from video surveillance of the stations and vehicles it operates. Literally mountains of surveillance video can be captured every day. This combined with heavy operational usage of unstructured data was creating volumes of data that UTA needed to efficiently and effectively archive to meet compliance and regulatory requirements.

Initially, UTA utilized the Assureon secure archive to protect its archived email, scanned documents and departmental/user files produced by UTA’s ~2,000 employees. Assureon provides efficient and secure protection of unstructured data compared to the traditional backup of the same files over and over that UTA performed prior to Assureon. Now UTA protects files from day one within Assureon where they are efficiently stored for simplified recovery and assured protection. In addition, Assureon periodically audits data for file integrity and availability throughout the life of the stored data.

UTA turned to its trusted solution provider, Ramsys Computer for a solution. “UTA’s data growth was having a tremendous impact on their backup window,” said Kirby Park, President, Ramsys Computer. “It was taking them five days to perform a full backup. They needed to find a solution that could dramatically reduce the backup window without requiring heavy time investments or complex management. That’s when we recommended Nexsan Assureon. It would provide the ability to separate the backup and archive streams for the enhanced performance and optimization needed to support remote replication while scaling to multiple petabytes to meet storage requirements.”

Ramsys Computer used a replicated Nexsan Assureon system to build a tiered storage solution. The replicated Assureon system was deployed at two separate sites within nine miles of each other and connected with a fiber optic IP network for disaster recovery. UTA also deployed multiple Nexsan SASBeast® storage systems with a combination of SAS and SATA drives

“I was impressed by the Nexsan Assureon solution delivered by Ramsys,” said John Jones, Desktop and Systems Supervisor, UTA. “We found significant value in the features and were even more surprised by the price. It was a fraction of that charged by other system vendors. With Assureon we reduced our backup window and significantly improved our overall storage efficiency. It has proven to be a very capable storage archive, both simple and reliable. You just set it and forget it.”

Part of the Nexsan Flexible Storage Platform™ of products, Assureon is a secure online archive that is ideal for storage optimization, regulatory and corporate compliance, and long-term archiving. For storage optimization, Assureon offloads primary storage to free up space for active data and thereby reduces the size, time and costs of monthly full backups by completely eliminating the unstructured datasets from the backup stream. For UTA, the existing backup environment was sufficient once Assureon moved the unstructured data sets from the backup stream to the archive stream. For regulatory and corporate compliance, Assureon complies with governmental regulatory requirements including HIPPA, SOX and SEC-17 and simplifies the enforcement of company data retention, privacy and protection policies. Ultimately, Assureon delivers reliability, efficiency, and ease of management UTA needs for its archiving processes.

“Organizations that rely on Assureon often see immediate results in terms of storage optimization and performance,” said Victoria Grey, Senior Vice President, Marketing, Nexsan. “But often of even greater value is the solution’s long term scalability, support for compliance regulations and absolute data integrity. Assureon delivers multiple value propositions for end-to-end data protection by providing archiving, disaster recovery and replication in a single solution that seamlessly integrate into UTA’s existing environment.”

Manual Process and MDM

Cost , Inefficiencies and Lack of Scalability Plague Conventional MDM - http://bit.ly/eOjIlN

It is interesting to review all of the market opportunity data relating to master data management. Visible almost immediately is the huge chunk of professional services required for implementation. Upon closer inspection this seems to be a very large percentage of the market. Vendors will tell you, and rightfully so, that all of this is paid for by the cost of a successful project. The return on investment is there. Of course, but this requires a successful and timely completion. However, it is still a large chunk of your cost and manual process also reads risk.

So look closer. There is a closely related but sometimes separately tracked market called (master data management) integration services. That market seems to include an even larger swath of professional services packaged with a few ETL links, extra data storage, and a data mart (or two). In total, when you add this all up, you can see that master data management is mostly about manual processes and human interaction. The software expense feels like, on a very good day, something approximately over 70% of the total expense for initial implementation and likely approaching 80%. The software in that bucket is a small slice of the overall expense. It is all about manual process and people.

If you don't see this expense you are not looking closely enough, IMHO.

Perhaps the costs are, in fact, even higher. My data about expense is all anecdotal. I ask the question and get answers. But most people are not completely sure. The vendor information is somewhat optimistic about implementation time. The industry analysts are a bit more astute, but they tend to leave the integration expense and consulting in another bucket. It is very hard to tell. When all is said and done, no one has likely been able to capture all of the email, conference calls, political wrangling and hallway meetings required to align your data models on a global basis. It is likely far more expensive than you know.

Manual process and human interaction does not scale well. It is not more efficient. It gets less efficient as the number of intermediaries to measure progress and “manage” grow. These resources cost more, raise the overhead and generally slow things down. You have alot of politics to deal with. Politics is the art of getting people to do what you want them to do as a function of influence, not authority. The results are not easily predicted, cooperation is not assured and the goals of the different parties are not in alignment. It should be very clear, especially in the wake of the economic debacle of Q4 2008, that the needs and interests of these groups are focused first on their top goals and objectives. Master data management may not be one of them.

Of course, to make this more difficult, all of this manual process and human interaction involved is distributed far and wide. You are necessarily dealing with people from diverse working groups and these working groups are attached to every line of business, IT team, geographical entity and P&L in your company. The larger you are, the better the return on investment should work for you, the more diverse the interaction you must sponsor. Cooperation is always a function of relationship, and you cannot always build close working relationships over a videoconference line or a conference call. Cooperation does not work well by command, except perhaps in the military. So you need to get on planes and visit your various work groups, at least once or twice. More process and time tied to hours of your time.

Lack of automation is a big problem. Right now everything is wrestled to the ground by committee. Emails and policy statements then flow out regarding data governance decisions. It is all manual process – not much is automated. There is no computer software enforcing and implementing the policies. You may need to scrub the duplicates out and if you do not… nothing happens.

Data governance teams need the same sorts of tools the information security teams have for implementation and enforcement. For example, your password expires and you must change it or you lose access to the system; you cannot install a 3rd party piece of software that is not approved; your email storage is limited in size and in some financial institutions must be auto archived and/or expired depending on the date and regulatory oversight; and so on. Automation needs to support authority but there are no tools, dashboards or automated workflow to tie this to legacy MDM architectures in a meaningful way.

GSE POWER SYSTEMS DEPLOYS RELDATA UNIFIED STORAGE FOR CENTRALIZED STORAGE AND DISASTER RECOVERY

RELDATA Solution Provides Flexibility, Easy Upgrade Path, and Greatly Improved Recovery Capability - http://bit.ly/pfCqXR

PARSIPPANY, New Jersey – July 19, 2011 – RELDATA Inc. (www.reldata.com), the innovation leader in unified block and file storage solutions over iSCSI, announced today that GSE Power Systems has deployed a RELDATA storage system for centralized storage and replication to more efficiently manage and protect its customer data to support complex integration and configuration activities.

GSE Power Systems, headquartered in Sykesville, Maryland, is the world leader in real-time simulation and training solutions for the electric power, oil and gas and chemical process industries. The company has delivered more than 1,100 simulation and training applications that teach employees how to operate equipment safely to hundreds of customers in more than 50 countries around the world.

"Activating our simulation and training applications at customer sites is a highly complex process where data protection plays a key role," said Jay Umholtz, information technology director at GSE Power Systems. “We work with scores of computers and systems from many different vendors across a wide variety of operating systems, during integration and testing. Often, the real time simulator connects to 10,000 to 20,000 IO Points. That represents millions of lines of engineering modeling code to produce the realistic training experience that our customers require. Protecting this information is a critical component of any given project."

Previously, GSE Power Systems had several servers, each with direct attached storage, at its Maryland headquarters and a branch office in Georgia, with both locations connected via a limited-bandwidth T3 link. Systems were not replicated at either location and data recovery was done from tape. The company wanted to upgrade to a centralized storage model, either iSCSI or NAS, at headquarters and replicate data to Georgia via the T3 line. Replication would have to be scheduled after normal business hours, as the line was in use for other business operations during the day. The company further specified that it wanted a system that would enable it to deploy either NAS or SAN, without having to purchase a separate system for each.

After examining several alternatives, GSE Power Systems decided the RELDATA 9240i offered the capabilities it was looking for in a primary storage solution. While the flexible, unified RELDATA solution offers both SAN and NAS capabilities, the company decided to initially deploy an iSCSI SAN. As its data storage requirements expand and it deploys virtualized servers, GSE Power Systems will be able to add NAS capabilities in the future to create a truly unified storage environment. And although the company is still using the T3 link between its two storage sites, the RELDATA solution supports 10GbE communications, which will allow GSE Power Systems to upgrade the link in the future any additional and costly hardware upgrades.

Today, a RELDATA 9240i with 24TBs capacity is installed at GSE’s Maryland headquarters and is duplicated at the remote location in Georgia for fail-safe remote data recovery. The system includes iSCSI SAN and replication software licenses, twelve 2TB 7.2K RPM SATA drives and two expansion shelves, each with 2TB 7.2K RPM SATA drives. In the future, the company plans to add a third site, which will integrate seamlessly into its existing infrastructure.

Because low-capacity snapshots are a key feature of RELDATA's RELVOS operating system, GSE Power Systems' IT staff can easily restore files and other data from snapshots throughout the day at the primary site, without the need to recover from tape. Replication takes place after business hours over existing bandwidth. The RELDATA system only replicates incremental changes to the data at the Georgia side, thereby eliminating the need to purchase expensive de-duplication or WAN acceleration technologies. Leveraging RELDATA’s asynchronous replication and snapshot technologies effectively increases GSE Power Systems' recovery point objectives (RPO) while significantly decreasing its recovery time objectives (RTO).

"GSE Power Systems needed more than just commodity storage, it needed a flexible solution that would solve its immediate needs and provide instantaneous benefits, yet also position it to add new capabilities as its business requirements change," said Victor Walker, CEO, RELDATA. "We're pleased that our unified storage solution gives GSE Power Systems a future-proof solution that allows them to deploy either a NAS, SAN or unified storage solution to support their requirements and help manage their business."

Higher Education Market Eliminates Storage Sprawl, Reduces Risk and Management Complexity with Gridstore’s Next-Generation NAS Storage

Mountain View, CA. – July 22, 2011 –Gridstore™, the leader in scale-out NAS solutions for the SMB market, announced today that it will showcase its Gridstore Scale-out NAS solution during Campus Technology 2011 in Boston, MA, July 25-28, in booth 757, at the Seaport World Trade Center. Gridstore’s Scale-out NAS offering combines the simplicity, convenience and affordability of NAS with the scalability, performance and reliability of enterprise-class storage at half the cost of proprietary solutions.

The Gridstore next-generation storage solution consolidates distributed NAS islands into a powerful, enterprise-class storage grid. As a result, the Gridstore Scale-out NAS solution is an ideal offering for Managed Service Providers (MSP), small and medium sized businesses (SMB), and distributed enterprises because it eliminates storage sprawl and combines the ease of NAS with the scalability and performance of enterprise-class storage.

“I selected Gridstore because I can get a scalable and reliable scale-out NAS system that provides me with enterprise features with minimal capital investment, and I don’t have to plan or pay for my future storage requirements today,” said Steve Garcia, systems and security administrator, Wenatchee Valley College. “We are implementing the Gridstore Scale-out NAS solution across our different departments and campuses; the system's combination of scalability and economies of scale are a very compelling value proposition for anyone who wants an on-demand storage solution that lets you add capacity on the fly with no performance or management headaches.”

The Gridstore storage platform is designed to eliminate the risk, cost and complexity of traditional silo-based storage and gives SMBs a “Pay as you Grow” pricing model that allows organizations to add storage as needed to eliminate the high cost of over provisioning and managing storage resources - while minimizing the reliability and risk of multiple NAS storage silos.

“Faculty, administrators and IT professionals in higher education are facing the same storage challenges as larger enterprises, but are severely limited to the amount of resources and money available to effectively manage their 24/7 operations,” said Kelly Murphy, CEO, Gridstore. “If storage stops their campus stops and this is not an option. Gridstore leverages all the benefits of NAS, but on an enterprise-scale so that everyone in higher education receives the scale-out NAS solution they need with the simplicity and reliability they require.”

Atlantis Computing CTO Chetan Venkatesh and Expert Jim Moyle Debate the future of VDI with Brian Madden and Gabe Knuth at BriForum 2011 Chicago

Can VDI Replace 90 Percent of PCs? Will Windows 7 IOPS Stall Your VDI Deployment? Should You Start Deploying VDI by P2Ving Existing Systems? Could A Single Handheld Nirvana Phone Replace your PC?

Mountain View, CA July 18, 2011 – Atlantis Computing, the leader in Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) storage and performance optimization solutions, today announced that Chetan Venkatesh, CTO and founder of Atlantis Computing and Jim Moyle, Lead Northern Europe Solutions Consultant for Atlantis Computing, will deliver four sessions at BriForum Chicago.

The Atlantis ILIO software virtual appliance allows organizations to slash the amount and cost of storage for VDI deployments, boosts desktop performance to ensure user acceptance and allows security to be deployed without impacting server density. The solution is easily deployed by Citrix, VMware, and Quest channel partners into existing Citrix XenDesktop, VMware View, and Quest vWorkspace deployments to either support more users on the same infrastructure, or address current scalability and performance issues. To learn more about Atlantis Computing solutions visit us at booth #6.

Atlantis Computing Experts to Address the Obstacles and Solutions to Overcoming VDI Challenges

• Brian & Chetan's VDI-in-the-Cloud Argument (One Year Later)
Chetan Venkatesh and Brian Madden debate the future and adoption of VDI vs. client-based desktop virtualization and what percentage of desktops will ultimately run on VDI and client devices.

• Windows IOPS Deep Dive: What IOPS Means to You and Why You Can't do VDI Without Knowing About Them
Jim Moyle presents new test data establishing how critical IOPS are to Windows 7 virtual desktops’ performance to dispel some of the myths behind sizing VDI storage.

• Does It Make Sense and Save Time Migrating to VDI by P2Ving Your Existing Systems?
Jim Moyle and Gabe Knuth discuss the idea of converting existing PCs to virtual PCs as a first step to VDI migration before tackling all the required components of the stateless desktop.

• A Single Handheld Device for Everything: The Nirvana Phone…Heaven or Hell?
Jim Moyle and Steve Greenberg will discuss the convergence of devices, the Citrix Receiver and whether users will adopt a single mobile device connected to VDI as their desktop.

BriForum is the only technical event that is 100 percent dedicated to desktop virtualization and VDI. The event is a unique opportunity for Atlantis Computing experts, top-notch industry analysts, bloggers and best-selling authors to talk honestly and openly about the future of desktop virtualization, the technical challenges they faced in real-world deployments, how they addressed them, and what worked or did not work.

“Last year Brian and I had a great debate with the BriForum audience about the future of desktop virtualization and whether the majority of desktops would end up running on VDI or client devices,” said Chetan Venkatesh, CTO and founder, Atlantis Computing. “A year later, and with more data points, I look forward to discussing the direction that desktop virtualization is taking.”

To watch last year’s VDI-In-The-Cloud debate at BriForum 2010, visit http://tinyurl.com/vdidebate

“Even though Windows 7 migration projects drive many VDI deployments, many customers are still unaware of the incredible amounts of storage needed to achieve the equivalent desktop performance of a physical PC,” said Jim Moyle, Lead Northern Europe Solutions Consultant, Atlantis Computing. “At BriForum, I will be presenting new test data that illustrates the relationship between storage throughput and desktop performance and I will explain how to size VDI storage to achieve optimum desktop performance.”

“The Nirvana phone concept leverages the combination of a smartphone that docks with a full size keyboard and display to access a Windows 7 desktop and applications running in a datacenter on a Virtual Desktop Infrastructure,” said Jim Moyle, Lead Northern Europe Solutions Consultant, Atlantis Computing. “With VDI, the performance and user experience is not limited by the phone’s CPU, memory and local storage.”

Vision for the Future: The Evolution of the Data Integration Market - http://bit.ly/qY0RFx

One of the major challenges organizations face today is how to bridge applications together in a way that enables true data mobility - integrating critical information across different business functions such as HR, sales, accounting, and customer support, so that all they key components of the organization can be preserved and shared among different application systems to drive greater business value.

A newly released video from Queplix™ called Vision for the Future: the Evolution of the Data Integration Market, provides an overview of first, second, and third generation data integration technologies, as well as the emergence of fourth generation, or Next Generation (NGEN), and the capabilities organizations should expect to see in 2012 and 2013.

The overview points out that, contrary to what most might believe, legacy or first generation ETL (extract, transform, load) technology is still predominantly used for data integration today. Further, many of the early integration cloud vendors are simply hosting 20-year old ETL technology in their one-year old clouds.

In sharp contrast, advanced data virtualization technology is powering third and fourth generation data integration products that represent the next wave. The Next Generation will be driven by a powerful convergence of data integration, management, virtualization, abstraction, persistent servers for automated data quality and governance, cloud and on-premise systems, virtual master data management and more. With NGEN, organizations will achieve true data mobility.

Automating Data Quality: A Template for Data Integration - http://bit.ly/qY0RFx

Keeping data consistent across business functions such as marketing and customer support is essential for the vitality of today's organizations. But when companies need to integrate data between applications, the consistency of data, or data quality, becomes an issue. Basic problems such as null fields, duplicate records, syntax problems, range problems and more, impact data quality and with multiple application sources and master data management, it becomes a complex and expensive problem to solve.

In this video , Michael Zuckerman, chief marketing officer for Queplix™ Corp ., outlines a template for data integration that involves automating data quality processes. This step by step template discusses the essentials of data quality - measurement and review, reporting and remediation, data governance, and data normalization and alignment, whether integrating two data sources or many. A highly automated approach delivers a faster, easier method to maintaining data quality, reducing risk, and improved results.
